We all know that health issues become more prevalent as we age, but do you know why? Or how to change them?

In a word: glycation. It’s why you are aging!

What is glycation? Basically, it’s when sugars can’t get into our cells for energy because the cells are so damaged, so the sugars float around in our bloodstream, sticking to cell membranes and damaging them even more.

Glycation results in AGEs, or Advanced Glycation End products. Many degenerative diseases, including diabetes, kidney disease, heart disease, and Alzheimer’s, are accelerated or worsened by AGEs.

AGEs cause all kinds of harmful problems in the body and can affect nearly every type of cell, including cells in our blood, organs, skin, eyes, and other tissues.

When sugar molecules stick to blood cells, this causes plaque and hardened arteries, leading to heart problems. And glycation is why our skin is not as soft and supple as when we were younger. When sugar molecules glycate the collagen in our skin, it loses some of its elasticity. Wrinkles ensue!

Glycation in our eye cells causes problems like cataracts and vision problems. This insidious process causes other kinds of aging in our bodies, too. Damage to hemoglobin protein in blood is one of the biggest ones.

A good way to find out just how much glycation is happening in your own body is the A1C test. This test is usually covered by insurance, or you can buy it at drugstores for $20 or $30. You don’t even need to go to a doctor to get it done.

The A1C test shows the average of how much sugar has been in your blood for the past three months.

An A1C between 4% and 5.6% is considered normal, while 5.7% to 6.4% is the pre-diabetic range. An A1C of 6.5% or higher indicates diabetes.

Basically, the higher the number, the more sugar is floating around in your blood that can’t get into your cells, and the more glycation you have — and thus the faster your cells are aging. When glycation happens, our cells start to power down. Sugar can’t get into the cells, so they don’t have enough energy, or ATP, to function properly.

Kare's Purple Rice Products - anti-glycationThis is where Micronized Purple Rice (MPR) comes in, dear one!

And this is why MPR is priceless as a potent anti-aging food, because it can help to reverse the effects of AGEs and lower glycation scores.

Dr. Doug Gabbert had this to say about how MPR helps with glycation:

“There are two ways MPR helps with powering the cells back up.

First, the purple rice grain is purple because of the type of antioxidants it has in it.

So naturally, when we look at glycation, we’re talking about a process that’s similar to free radical damage in the body. Sugar molecules, especially from processed sugars, act like free radicals — they damage the cells.

The more sugars you consume, the more free radical activity you have and the more damage that occurs.

So the antioxidants in MPR can be a wonderful support in helping to offset the risk of damage.

We have clinical studies showing MPR’s ability to help nutritionally support the body as it regulates blood sugar levels, and some studies showed a one percent reduction in A1C scores after 90 days of eating MPR, three teaspoons a day.

Interestingly enough, they got some really wonderful results there, without changing the client’s lifestyle or diet. They just ate MPR three times a day. People in the study dropped 4, 5, 6 points on their A1C after 90 days, with overall a one percent drop, which is really pretty huge.”

And if you want to accelerate those results – cut out sugar and flour and drink plenty of pure fresh water, to flush away the cellular wastes.

It’s not quite as easy as stepping into the fabled Fountain of Youth, but I’d say it’s definitely worth the effort, wouldn’t you?

As always, I’d love to hear from you in the comments.
